What Is Cost Basis

Cost basis can be simply conveyed as the original value of an asset or how much you paid for an asset. The cost basis is used to determine the capital gain which is the value that's equal to the difference between the asset's cost basis and the current market value. For example, the cost basis can be seen in the original value cost of property and the taxes involved with the adjustment of depreciation.
